Kerrang demographics and publisher information.
The kerrang demographics show that the main bulk of their readers are between the ages of 15 and 24, it could be said that this is shown in the house style as it is designed to appeal more to this demographic. The conventions of the magazines front cover has a lot going on with it each of the cover lines has a picture to go along with it this could be argued to be more appealing to a younger demographic as it has more going on and appears more exciting to the more simplistic design of magazines like Q magazine which has a older demographic. One surprising factor of the magazine is the almost even percentage of genders that read the magazine.
Also 51% of its readers are in the lower middle class or above according to the ABC1 profile, this means that magazine reaches a variety classes meaning that it must have a good distribution method and also a appealing style.
The percentage of readers decreases as the age group gets older further adding to the conclusion that the magazine is aiming for the younger demographic.
The publisher bauer media also publishes many other magazines such as Empire magazine, a movie review based magazine which has a more reserved style than kerrang, Grazia magazine, has themes such as mix of fashion and beauty trends this magazine is aimed at women. This shows that bauer media publishes a variety of magazine styles and demographics increasing its market share in the media business.

- the front cover has a colour scheme of white, yellow and red.
- the front cover almost has this hectic feel to it as it has lots of cover lines and pictures that accompany them.
- the pull quote on the front cover contains a swear word, this shows that the tone of the magazine is quite relaxed and informal.
- the are kind of sensationalist style cover lines for example: YOU ME AT SIX GO CLASSICAL!?
- the main image is the center of attention of the cover but the other cover lines also have a presence on the page
- the mast head of the magazine is part hidden by the main picture, the mast head also has a unique font style.
Contents Page analysis:
- the contents page has pictures of the coverlines of the front pagebut surprisingly though there is no repersentation of the main article in the contents page.
- there are a lot of stories that were not listed on the front cover.
- there are sub-sections to the contents page that are semi generic names for these but interesting names for the articles under the sub headings
- the three colour scheme is still kind of present in the magazine with the addition of a new colour which is purple.

- The font of the heading of the article is unique to the article it's self
- the head line of the article is in refer to a book being released by the subject of the article.
- the article starts off with a anecdote about the subject of the article about some of his CRAZY ANTICT'S that sets the mood for the article.
- There is also a use of profanity in the first section of the text.
- the feel of the text is very informal.
Magazine case study 1
Features of the front cover:
· The front cover has a three colour scheme of Red, White and black.
- · There is a simplistic style to the front cover.
- · The cover lines rather than framing a centre figure on the cover they are almost part of the image, the main cover line of the magazine is placed on the centre of the image which happens to be a table which gives an interesting aesthetic for the magazine.
- · The image is in black and white the red underlining of the white text contrast nicely with the colours in the image drawing the eye towards the text on the image.
- · The mast head of the magazine is in the top left hand side of the magazine cover it seems like it is supposed to be subtle and stylish whilst not being imposing.
- · The Pull name on the front cover is underlined in a different manner to the others this draws the eye even more to the text.
Contents page analysis:
·
The
regular features are put into one Colum together. The features have names that
are unique to the magazine, this gives the magazine a unique and special feel,
personalising the magazine.
·
The
special features of the magazine are in the centre of the page some of the
articles are accompanied by a related picture.
·
The
contents page also features a list of bands, these are the bands that feature
in the magazine, this is useful for some one that is interested in the magazine
to see whether or not a band that they are interested in features in the
magazine or not.
·
The
colour theme also persists from the front cover of red, black and white.
·
There
is a house style that is present in the magazine, it is a simplistic and
functional font.
·
The
contents page of the magazine is only a single page as it is only a weekly
magazine meaning that there is not as much content in the magazine as a monthly
magazine.
Double page
Spread:
- · The DPS has a picture of the subject of the magazine in the centre of the two pages.
- · The magazine has a house style of having 3 columns on each page
- · It also has a pull quote emboldened on the page this is to draw the reader’s attention to the article and is picked to interest the reader.
- · There are drop capitals in the article.
- · There are also bold phrases at the beginning of the sections and reading those phrases also makes the read want to read more of the article.
- · The article starts off with an introduction into the subject matter: Ian Curtis. It’s Almost like a eulogy by his widow. This is a piece that explains what the artist was like to the fans.

College Magazine case study
Front cover analysis:
-The magazine masthead is a simple white font, the have shortened the name of the college to something more informal to create a more personal and casual feel with the reader.
-They include allusions to other popular culture things in the cover line "The Big Fat Greek Trip". -There is change between the font of each subject corresponding with the subject that is talking about. -The main image of the cover confuses the eye as it does not necessarily correspond to the three colour scheme of the rest of the cover which is white, red and turquoise.
The Contents page analysis:
-the contents page of the magazine does not have any sub-sections, it just lists them chronologically. this makes it more difficult for the reader to find a article that interests them.
- the font on the contents page is completely different to the one on the front cover.
- The editors note is above the contents page reducing the amount that could be fitted into the contents.
-there are no pictures relating to the articles of the magazine on the contents page but there does appear to be white frames for them so this could just be a formatting issue with the PDF.

Evaluation of my first article
Evaluation of my first indesign effort.
The first time I used indesign was on that first article I posted up here. In this article we were tasked to write about the effect that piracy had on the changing face of music. We wrote this article in word first so it would be easier to edit and break up into chunks that would fit into the column boxes.
I was writing the article for the guardian so the plain background was part of the design of the article, but on revaluation I could've used the blue heading underlining that the guardian is known for and the minimalist design that is its signature of the newspaper.
I could have also added more colour to the article by highlighting the quotations in a different colour this could've added a more interesting aspect to the article.
in conclusion I have learnt a lot about the format of indesign and my work on it can only improve the next piece will have many more features to it and hopefully look much improved than the first piece.
